About Graphic Design Schools:
A successful future in the new media industry (and graphic design in particular) depends on the right school. As a graduate student in this field, I will be able to give you absolutely the best advice I can on this topic.
Focus area:
First, what you need to know about these types of schools is that they are designed with everyone in mind. This means that people entering the program have absolutely no experience. In my case, they asked for a portfolio(profile) of work as part of the admission process.
So, if you are self-educated and able to strengthen your already existing knowledge, or are a total beginner, then this is a good option for you. However, if you have already completed a similar program. if you may want to take a new program just to upgrade your skills (since the field of new media is always changing). If you can, it really, really, really helps if you take a freehand drawing course before learning how to use a computer.
Recognition:
- Does the school take part in an art competition?
- Did the students achieve something known in the industry?
Teacher
Undoubtedly, Trust me, it doesn’t go without saying. The quality of your training will be directly related to the instructors. I have never met an instructor who is not highly knowledgeable about the subject area. Of course, there is a big difference between knowing the subject and being able to teach (that is, to convey this information, manage students, answer questions, etc.).
Job placement:
Make 100% sure you attend a program that includes work experience. Or at least an exercise. This is usually 100 hours of real on-the-job experience and is absolutely invaluable to your career.
Curriculum and equipment
You should assess whether the syllabus is relevant to your field of study. You can compare the curriculum of different schools to see which one offers the best form of education. In my case, the administration did something they had never done before: cut the curriculum in half throughout the program. The rationale behind this was that the software we were instructed in would soon be ported to the Mac. It really pays to look at the features in advance so you know what tools they use. Just ignore the computers, look around and look at the program directory, and note which programs are installed and if they are the latest versions.
Student-to-teacher ratio:
Graphic design is a unique industry that requires individual contributions to more or less every project. For this reason, you can not only be known as a Photoshop guy, it is your responsibility to be well-versed in the many different programs and techniques to create stunning graphics and images. And that means you definitely need one-on-one instruction, or at least the ability to pause the class in case you get lost. These programs are very fast-paced and if you are not sure you fully understand the concepts in the first semester, you will be hopelessly lost – fast.
Accreditation:
Accreditation means that the school has passed certain standards of educational quality. If you can, literally ask for a minute of key department hours and discover the list of companies that have hired students.
Costs:
Without a doubt, A full degree in graphic design can cost anywhere from $13,000 to $16,000 for an intensive one-year program (120 credits). The goal here is to find a university, college, or technical institution that is internationally recognized for excellence. Let’s face it, Harvard University Cambridge USA will look a lot better on your resume than Texas Community College. BCIT, in Vancouver Canada, has three great accredited schools (Vancouver is on par with Hollywood for graphic designers, web designers, and very new media experts), the Art Institute (with locations around the world), and the Vancouver Film School (VFS). Ass. There are graphic design programs that are very specialized.
You may want to consider whether the design school you are looking for offers any scholarships. You want to know the terms for them too. Some schools provide scholarships based on academic performance. Some offer them based on the art competitions they organize regularly. You should somehow qualify for a national student loan, and the repayment is extremely affordable.
