There are many things to keep in mind while designing a piece of jewellery for a person. First, the size, style, and colour for the person you’re designing for, and second, the size, style, and colour for that particular type of design, which includes all of the necessities and limitations needed to make the piece comfortable and functional. If these aspects are considered, your client will have jewellery that suits the personality and lifestyle of an individual. In this way, the customer receives jewellery that can become an integral part of their wardrobe and remain a favourite for years, perhaps even generations. The first point to remember is this:

Design preferences

The first important thing is whether the person we are designing for is a man or a woman. Knowing this makes the job easier and a designer can design the piece accordingly. While designing we should also pay attention to the age group i.e. children, youth and the elderly. Otherwise, attention should be paid to making different types of jewellery i.e., rings, earrings, pendants, brooch, necklaces etc…? This is the most important thing to keep in mind while designing any jewellery because what is missing here can create complete chaos in further design.

If we have decided on this, then we have to take into account many variations, which means whether it should be real or costume jewellery.

Subject and Context:

After deciding the type of jewellery, the designer must identify the customer’s interest in the design. Sometimes the customer orders all the designs on a particular theme, for example, love, music, ocean, etc. So, we have to design on those themes keeping in mind the latest trend. Also, the occasion on which the customer is going to wear it is very important, be it engagement, wedding, birthday, anniversary, Valentine’s Day, Diwali, Id, Christmas, official gathering etc.

Jewellery Size:

Some jewellery requires a certain size to be worn, such as rings, bracelets, bangles, necklaces, etc. Ring sizes range from 5 to 13 in (15.7 to 22.2 m). Use the ring that fits you best to determine your ring size. Circle your ring to the nearest size. The inner edge of the ring should line up with the outside edge of the circle, so if your ring feels like it fits between the two sizes, buy the larger size. Women’s standard necklace size 16″ choker length, 17-18″ collarbone and bead string – 30″ below the chest and men’s standard chain size 18″ neck base – for smaller neck sizes, 20″ to collarbone – most Common lengths are for an average-sized man, 22″ from a few inches below the collarbone to 24″. Ring and necklace bracelets should be tailored to a specific size. Common bracelet sizes are 7¼” for the average female wrist, for the average man. 8½” for women with larger wrists and 9″ for men with larger wrists. So keep the size factor in mind as well. The design will be very consistent.

Metal:
  • It’s important to draw the design before turning it into an actual jewellery piece, so the designer should show off a rendering of the metal in his design. Suitable metal, ie gold, silver, platinum, alloy, brass or other material.
  • Jewellery is made from almost every known material, while high quality and aesthetic pieces are made from precious metals, cheap and expensive jewellery is made and manufactured from cheap materials.
  • If a customer wants to buy gold jewellery, the first thing that should be kept in mind is the word carat. Carat is the unit used to represent the proportion of gold in jewellery. Pure gold is set at 24 karats, but 24 karat gold is not jewellery because pure gold is too flexible to fit any type of jewellery shape.
  • Diamond jewellery is popular in 18-k (75% gold), 16-k (66.67% gold), 14-k (about 58% gold), and 12-k (50% gold). The purity of silver jewellery is 92.5. One metal that has gained a lot of popularity over the past ten years is platinum. Platinum is used to make all kinds of jewellery.
  • Learn how and why this process occurs and how different metals form different colours.
Metal decorations:

Metal embellishments add to the beauty of the jewellery. Therefore, after deciding the metal designer should work on the decoration of the metal i.e., enamelling, filigree or texture or finishing of the metal. A variety of finishes can be used, be it a matte finish, a Florentine, or a satin finish. Hammering textures are a recent trend. It is important to decide before making the polishing and plating jewellery.

If vacuum electroplating is done on its surface with a metal such as nickel or brass, the golden yellow colour will look like gold, or the light grey colour will look like platinum. Through the above steps, the metal will be covered with jewellery as a result of the declaration, and the quality and value of the product will be greatly increased.

Selecting Gems:

  • Jewellery is a wonderful accessory which can be designed in different metals and gems. These gems can be used in different sizes, colours and varieties. Diamonds are the most beautiful gemstone to compose your jewellery design.
  • When using diamonds and other coloured gems in jewellery, there are four aspects to consider. These are the cut, colour, carat and clarity of the diamond. The most important of these four aspects is the carat of the diamond. As the weight and size increase, so does the price. The aspects of the gemstone should be balanced and this is called symmetry. Finally, cuts should be made along specific lines so as not to chip off the surface. Gemstones must be clean. It is not included.
  • Or it will lower their price. Jewellery can last for years, so try to use precious or precious gems.
  • Although looks can be deceiving, if you are not wise enough to choose good quality gems, you may end up with poor quality gems. Gemstones depend on the choice of the customer or the look of the jewellery. Sometimes they choose it or like to wear it according to their planetary position.
Setting up gems:

After selecting gems for workouts, it is very important what kind of settings to use. A seat is first cut out of stone and then the stone is covered with some metal from above to secure the children in their setting. This traps the stone so that it cannot move down or up. There are several options for how to secure the stone to the mounting. The most common settings are rub over, pave, channel, illusion, star setting, invisible setting, suspension setting, countersunk, prong setting, and grain set.

The most common method of setting gemstones and diamonds in prong setting, but there are many other methods used to set gemstones in precious metals. So the stone setting is an important feature of jewellery design and manufacturing.

Link, Clip and Clasp:

When it comes to jewellery making it is easy to make if we show proper links, clips and clasps in our designs. Should the designer use them as an integral part of jewellery making? Many designers have done this very effectively. Check the jewellery design whether links, clips or clasps are used. Clips or clasps are essential jewellery elements and must be placed properly. If a designer designs a faxable chain, make the correct number. Distance joints or loops. A piece of jewellery such as bracelets, necklaces, earrings or other decorative items requires a proper locking mechanism. These locks may have some design. If you want to put a brooch on a garment, the best way is to pine-needle it or pin it to the handle. This version has a variety of variants to prevent the needle of the brooch from coming out. If you want to fix the earring to the earring, a threaded hinge is used as a stop. The “U” type of clip is the simplest way to wear earrings with pierced ears and is best used for aesthetic reasons and good balance. Some commonly used closures are lateral hinge closing, keg closing, box closing, spring clip and spring ring-closing.

Customer budget:
Budget

There is no price limit for jewellery but if the customer orders it for a certain amount, then we have to design our product while keeping this limit in mind. Imagine a customer wants a piece for fifty thousand rupees, it should be fifty thousand after charging our profit. We should focus on profit and cost. If the jewellery costs fifty thousand, it is very difficult to explain to them why the price is out of budget. So, it should be very clear that the price of the ordered piece should not exceed the budget of the customer.

Certification:

A designer must be aware of the certification of jewellery and gems. Hallmarking of purity certification of gold, gems and diamonds will increase your trust and lasting relationship with your customers. it is about authenticity and quality.

Packaging:

If we are designing a beautiful jewellery piece and getting it manufactured then we should also think of a designer jewellery box for it. It will show the complete design sense of a designer. Many designers do not understand the importance of packaging their jewellery properly. A proper jewellery box will enhance the look of the jewellery and will also help in keeping the jewellery piece in a safe manner. Designers can print their specific brand on it. This will create a good image of you but keep in mind that the design of the package fits with your product range.

Jewellery is the opposite of clothing or equipment. Jewellery does not lose its value and hence, your piece of jewellery should be durable and remain the same for a long time. Having a proper plan before designing and making any jewellery will make your job easier and will also save you time and cost.
